Ozzie Eats: The Tamale Spaceship Food Truck
By Ozzie Godinez
Ozzie Eats is making its comeback esta semana with a trip to infinity and beyond. Well, maybe not quite that far but, we did head over to The Tamale Spaceship, a food truck that stops at Clinton and Lake each Thursday.
This silver food truck brings together Mexican luchadores, Space travel and tamales deliciosos in an interesting way. The servers in the truck wear the famous masks of the Mexican luchadores as they serve lunch. We showed up at the stop not long after it arrived, but it didn’t take long for the line of people to grow down the sidewalk.
The Spaceship carries six varieties of tamales, beverages and fresh guacamole. They pre-package the tamales and each pack of two costs $7.75. Considering how hearty they are (and delicious, and authentic), that’s not a badprice for a lunch that leaves you muy satisfecho.
The beauty of a food truck is that it’s always easy to take your food to go – which we did. At the office, we dove into the three that we brought back. All of them had a great balance between the masa and protein. Here’s what we tried:
Complicate de Carne
Made with Skirt Steak, the Complicate de Carne comes with a traditional Oaxacan black mole and sesame seed sauce. While it seemed slightly overwhelmed by the amount of pepper, it still tasted fantástico. If you like a lot of pepper on your carne asada then you’ll love this tamale.
Picturesque tamal de Puerco

While this Yucatán-style roasted pork tamale was probably the least-spiced of the proteins that we tried, its sauce is the one we remember most. The tomato-habanero sauce with purple pickled onions was un acento perfecto, adding a little heat with each bite. My tongue still burns from the habanero peppers. Loved this sauce!!
No One’s Tamal de Pollo
This chicken tamal is done in a barbacoa-style and topped with a Michoacán green-peanut mole. It took us a while to figure out what the nutty taste in the sauce was, but we were very excited when we did. Yummy!
